April 21 Morning: sessions open to competition agencies only

Market studies with Amelia Fletcher
This session will focus on market studies and their outcomes and could include discussions of interventions designed to help consumer decision-making and overall remedy effectiveness.

Competition policy in tech markets with Kai-Uwe Kühn
This session will discuss common features of tech markets and innovation processes to understand how these could impact analyses of competition and innovation incentives, remedy effectiveness, and broader antitrust policies.

 

April 21 Afternoon: sessions open to competition agencies only

Using econometrics in investigations (and litigation) with Aviv Nevo
This session will discuss the various practical challenges related to using econometrics in actual investigations, including collecting data, conducting the analysis and training staff. We are looking for agencies to share their experiences, both successful and less so.

Retail cartels with Frode Steen and Joe Harrington
The session will discuss retail cartels, including those in the gasoline market, and look at both evidence and theory on how retail cartels work.

 

April 22 Morning: sessions open to competition agencies and NGAs

Abuses in digital markets with Thibaud Vergé
This session will focus on abuse of dominance in digital markets, including vertical restraints used by online platforms.

Coordinated effects with Rob Porter
This session will review the role of coordinated effects in merger reviews and look at the theory as well as recent empirical studies.

 

April 22 Afternoon: sessions open to competition agencies and NGAs

Vertical mergers with Margaret Slade
This session will focus on vertical mergers, including those in the telecommunications and media sectors, and include discussions of market definition, double marginalization, foreclosure, and the balance of benefits and competitive harms.

Exploitative abuses with Massimo Motta
This session will discuss business practices, such as excessive prices and unfair trading conditions that might be considered “exploitative abuse of dominance” in several jurisdictions.

Direct by plane
Several airlines fly to Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO) from international or national airports.

Getting to the city centre
The airport is approximately 20 km South-West of the city. There are three main public transport options from the airport to the city centre:

The Bergen Light Rail – the slowest, but cheapest
The Airport Bus – faster, but more expensive
Taxi – the fastest, but most expensive
The Norwegian Airport Authority, Avinor, has a webpage with details about these options. You can find information about car rental on the same web page.

Buses to NHH from the city centre
NHH is situated in Helleveien 30, a less than 10-minute bus ride north from the city centre.

You can get different kinds of bus tickets from ticket machines at the stop, from bus company service centres, from some kiosks and shops or by downloading the Skyss ticket app.

You can also buy a single ticket from the bus driver, but please note that this will require Norwegian currency in cash, and that it is much more expensive than other options due to a price supplement for paying cash on board.

The following northbound buses run through the city centre and pass NHH frequently (as of January 2020):

There are several bus stops in the city centre where you can get on the mentioned lines. There are digital signs at the stops that tell you when the next bus is due to arrive.

Once you have embarked, signs on board will announce the name of upcoming stops. Get off the bus at “Handelshøyskolen” and you only have a short walk left before you arrive at NHH.

You can return to the city centre from a southbound stop even closer to NHH. The buses will have the same number, but different destinations. Please note that buses marked “E“ for express, may not go through the city centre, but through a tunnel to the central bus station in the southern part of the city centre.

By taxi
Taxis are available at the airport and at taxi stops in the city centre or by order via phone. There is no Uber.

Registration and cost

 

Who can register for the Workshop?
Official representatives of ICN member authorities are invited to register for the Workshop.

A limited number of spots for Non-Governmental Advisors (NGAs) including competition professionals and academics, are available for sessions on Wednesday April 22. We ask that NGAs obtain their nomination from the member authority prior to registering.

How do I register for the Workshop?
Representatives of ICN member authorities can register by completing the registration form.

Non-Governmental Advisors (NGAs) can register at the same address after obtaining their nomination from an ICN member authority.

Do I need to pay to register and participate in the Workshop?
There is no cost to participate in the Workshop. Lunch and refreshments during the Workshop and the Workshop Welcome reception are also complimentary.

Delegates are responsible for booking and paying for their own travel and accommodation, and other related expenses (e.g. visa costs, travel insurance, transport).

 

Venue and language

What is the venue for the Workshop?

What is the language of the Workshop?
The Workshop will be conducted in English and there will be no interpretation services provided. Workshop documents will be issued in English.
